An Overview of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and Nutrition

An Overview of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and Nutrition

Understanding the relationship between erectile dysfunction and nutrition takes some effort. For example, certain foods are good at promoting cardiovascular health. They can also have a positive impact on erectile dysfunction.

On the other hand, a diet that causes obesity can contribute to the issue.

You should know some things about the relationship between what you eat and this common problem. First, there’s a body of research about certain foods containing properties that can prevent, help, or even treat ED.

Berries

A decade-long study of 25,000 middle-aged men indicates that consuming the flavonoids in berries had a positive effect.

A Reduction in ED

The National Library of Medicine study reported that consuming strawberries and blueberries provided an 11% reduction in the incidence of ED. Some other foods that fell into this category and have the same results included citrus fruits, pears, and apples.

More Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and Nutrition Guidelines

A seven-year clinical trial examined the relationship between olive oil, Mediterranean diets, and ED. It concluded that the antioxidant and omega-3 anti-inflammatory ingredients remove some properties that could inflame erectile dysfunction.

Another Follow-Up Study

Another US Health Professionals Follow-up Study began in 1986 and covered 21,469 men. It provided some more interesting information on the relationship between diet and ED.

The researchers used the Mediterranean Diet Score to research the quality of what these men ate. They found that:

  • The higher Mediterranean Diet Scores made for a lower occurrence of ED among those men who were older than 60 years old.
  • Men who are under 60 years old had a low incidence of ED with a high Mediterranean Diet Score.

The findings of this research were similar to other data. The body of work suggested that eating healthy over a lifetime helps to protect against developing erectile dysfunction.

That said, there are some other foods that research points to as having health benefits that protect men from this problem.

The Effect of Whole Grains on ED

A 2017 study examined the effects of whole grains on erectile dysfunction. The National Library of Medicine found that a Mediterranean Diet, including whole grains, can help treat ED. The research proved that this menu choice works better than a low-fat option.

Viewing Your Health Holistically

It’s important to remember that most experts will tell you to view your health holistically. While many factors can influence the onset of ED, nutrition plays a critical role in your overall health.
