An Overview of ED and the Value of Exercise

Erectile dysfunction is the constant inability to maintain or achieve an erection to perform sexually. Recent studies have drawn a parallel between ED and the value of exercise.

There are several risk factors for erectile dysfunction according to John Hopkins Medical. Some of the direct factors that cause this issue include prostate problems, and Type II diabetes as well as hypertension or high blood pressure and chronic sleep disorders.

If you are suffering from this ailment, exercise and proper treatments can help.

  • A Harvard Health study, recently assessed some of the evidence for the value of exercise in helping with the symptoms and issues involved with ED. In fact, some of the research that was conducted in 2006 had some encouraging news. It reported that men who worked outside for at least three hours a week were 20% less likely to develop erectile dysfunction.
  • These experts also recommend that riding a bike is a good way to get physical exercise. However, narrow bicycle seats can be an issue leading to numbness in the penis. Harvard Health suggests that you pick a wide seat with a lot of padding. They also suggest that men who are looking to avoid erectile dysfunction should wear padded bike shorts.

ED and the Value of Exercise: What Exercises Work Best?

Several different exercises can help with the pelvic muscles and ED. Those include what are called Kegels or pelvic floor exercises. These are an excellent way to target the muscles of the bottom of your pelvis.

These exercises and pelvic floor training have been proven to help men with ED regain normal functions. A study in the United Kingdom found it helped 40% of the men who use them to regain normal abilities. An additional 35.5% saw excellent improvements in erectile performance.

These are designed to strengthen the muscles of the pelvis.

Patients have other choices too.

Aerobic Exercises

Working other muscles beyond the ones in the pelvis is useful. Research published by the American Journal of Cardiology reports that aerobic exercise can improve ED. Erectile dysfunction is often caused by blood flow problems stemming from other issues like high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity.

Men should add aerobic exercises to any routine they currently have, to improve their general health and enjoy possible improvements if they suffer from ED.
