Treatment for Painful Erections

Treatment for Painful Erections

If you are experiencing painful erections, you may be eager to understand the cause of the problem and resolve it. Unfortunately, many men face difficulties when seeking medical help for sexual issues. It can be embarrassing to share intimate details with your family doctor, and many family physicians do not take these kinds of concerns seriously, or don’t have the knowledge base to treat them effectively. Dr. Dhanesh Juta identified a need for a clinic dedicated to men’s sexual disorders and, in 2022, he founded Precision Men’s Sexual Health Clinic, a North York medical centre that offers treatment to men in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. The medical team at Precision is welcoming, discreet, and knowledgeable about men’s sexual health, and they offer a full range of state-of-the-art treatments for a variety of issues.

What Causes Painful Erections?

A doctor can help you to discover the cause of your pain, but the most common cause of erection pain is Peyronie’s Disease, which affects approximately 9% of men between 40 and 70 years old. Peyronie’s Disease occurs when scar tissue known as plaque builds up inside the penis, causing it to bend or curve when erect. Researchers aren’t yet sure what causes Peyronie’s Disease, but some common risk factor include age, penile trauma, a family history of Peyronie’s disease, a history of connective tissue disorders, vitamin deficiency, use of beta blockers, or a history of prostate cancer.

Peyronie’s disease can develop gradually, but often the onset is sudden. Men with this condition will notice a significant bend to their erect penis, usually an upward curve, but sometimes downward or to the left or right. Some men observe indentations on their penis shaft when erect, or that it acquires an hourglass shape, with a tight band of tissue constricting the centre of the penis. Peyronie’s Disease can also cause shrinking or shortening of the penis. When the penis is flaccid, men with Peyronie’s can usually feel flat lumps of tissue or hard bands of tissue on the penile shaft. This is what causes the penis to curve when erect; this scar tissue (known as “plaque”) isn’t as able to expand in the way that healthy tissue does and so it constricts one or more areas whenever blood flows into the penis. For some men, the effects of this scar tissue are mainly cosmetic, but for others, plaque causes excruciating pain or prevents them from achieving or maintaining a satisfactory erection. This can lead to a loss of intimacy, clinical depression, and self-esteem issues.
